Overview

The Workforce Summit

For every employer competing in the global economy, attracting and retaining top-notch talent is the most critical challenge they face. So how do you create a workforce that’s prepared to take on the world? How do you train them—and retain them? Forbes and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder convened a first-of-its-kind congress of industrial leaders, entrepreneurs, academics and
growth-oriented policy makers focused on this crucial issue.

Location

The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit

We picked Detroit for a lot of reasons—but mostly because it occupies a unique place in the world's business history, and its future. It was the birthplace of the American middle class, where Henry Ford decided that the key to building his future prosperity was insuring that his workers prospered as well. It was the birthplace of the African American middle class, where tens of thousands of southern blacks migrated after the second world war to find a once unthinkable economic mobility on the assembly lines satisfying the nation's unquenchable desire for automobiles. And today, it is home to a unique ecosystem of partnerships between technology entrepreneurs like Quicken Loans' Dan Gilbert, traditional big companies like Ford and GM, and the local government—to rebuild the city and attract first-rate talent from all across the US and the world. Detroit has become a model for how cities that are broken can begin the hard work of reinventing themselves. Forbes is optimistic that they can do it—and we want to be a part of that effort.
